Podium Browser for Rhino - Installation and User Guide

Podium Browser for Rhino

Installation and User Guide - version 1.0.1 - Cadalog Inc

Podium Browser for Rhino puts the Podium Browser content library inside Rhino3D as a dockable panel. Browse or search the library, switch between the Rhino (.3dm) and SketchUp (.skp) catalogs, and click a model to download it and place it in your open Rhino document - no manual downloading, unzipping or importing.

1. Before you install

2. Choose an installation method

This package contains two folders - two ways to install the same plug-in. Pick one.

FolderBest forEffort
1 - Package Manager (recommended) Normal use. Rhino tracks the version and can update or remove it cleanly. One click inside Rhino.
2 - Manual (rhp) Testing, or if the Package Manager is blocked by IT policy. Drag one file onto Rhino.
3 - Manual (.yak) Testing, or if the Package Manager is blocked by IT policy. Drag one file onto Rhino.

Package Manager (recommended)

Podium Browser is available in the Rhino3D online Package Manager.

  1. Start Rhino and run the PackageManager command (also in the Tools menu).
  2. Search for Podium Browser.
  3. Click Install, then restart Rhino.

To install the .yak file supplied in download page instead:

  1. Close Rhino.
  2. Open a Command Prompt (press the Windows key, type cmd, press Enter.
  3. Run the command below, replacing the folder path with the location of folder "1 - Package Manager (recommended)" on your computer:
"C:\Program Files\Rhino 8\System\Yak.exe" install --source "D:\Podium Browser for Rhino\1 - Package Manager (recommended)" podium-browser
  1. Start Rhino. The plug-in loads automatically.

To update later, run the same command again with the newer package; to remove it, run "C:\Program Files\Rhino 8\System\Yak.exe" uninstall podium-browser.

Or simply use the Package Manager to uninstall. Open the Package Manager from Tools. Select Installed option. Select podium-browser and then Uninstall button

3. Using the Podium Browser plug-in

Opening the panel

  1. Type PodiumBrowser on the Rhino command line and press Enter. (Running it again closes the panel.)
  2. Drag the panel by its title to dock it - the right-hand side works well - and drag its inner edge to widen it.
  3. You can also install and use the Podium Browser tool bar. To display the new Podium Browser toolbar, right click on the empty space in the Rhino toolbar and click on show toolbars and use the top dropdown to switch from default to Cadalog Web Plugin and check the podium browser toolbar and it will show in a tab in the toolbar area.  Then toggle Podium Browser on/off by clicking the Podium Browser item.

Choosing a catalog

The Catalog dropdown at the top of the panel switches the library:

Your choice is remembered the next time you start Rhino.

Finding and placing a model

  1. Browse the categories on the left, or use the search box at the top of the page.
  2. Tick Show Only Free Files if you do not have a license key yet.
  3. Click the download icon on a model.
  4. The plug-in downloads the file and imports it. Progress is reported on the Rhino command line, prefixed with [Cadalog].
  5. The model arrives attached to your cursor: click once in a viewport to drop it where you want it.

The placed geometry is ordinary Rhino geometry - move, scale, rotate or explode it as usual. Undo removes it if you change your mind.

License key

Free items need no key. To unlock the paid library, enter your Podium Browser license key using the account button in the panel, exactly as you would on the Podium Browser website.

4. Troubleshooting

SymptomWhat to do
"Unknown command: PodiumBrowser" The plug-in is not loaded. Open Tools > Options > Plug-ins, search for "Podium Browser" and tick it, then restart Rhino.
The panel is blank or white The Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is missing. Install it from Microsoft (search for "WebView2 Runtime"), then restart Rhino.
Nothing happens after clicking download Check the Rhino command line for lines beginning with [Cadalog]. No lines at all usually means the item is a paid item and no valid license key is entered.
The model arrives far too large or too small The model file and your document use different units. Set your document units (Units command) before inserting, or scale the object afterwards.
The model is placed but not attached to the cursor Rhino's importer did not leave it selected. Select the new objects and use Move to position them.
Installation fails saying a file is in use Rhino is still running. Close every Rhino window and try again.

Downloaded files are staged in \Cadalog\downloads. They can be deleted at any time; they are only a working copy - the geometry lives in your Rhino document.
